The AFLW Western Derby clash at Fremantle Oval was handed an eleventh-hour exemption from the State Government’s new vaccination entry mandate for major events.

More than 5000 spectators flocked to the ground on Saturday evening for Fremantle’s clash with West Coast for the opening round of the 2022 AFLW season.

On Monday, newly-appointed Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson announced that proof of vaccination was required for major events with more than 500 people in attendance.

A State Government spokesman on Saturday night, however, said the AFLW clash would not be subject to the rule.
